Jacky Winter is pleased to present Paper Binoculars by Yoko Georgiou – a series of rugs and paper sculptures that draw on childhood memories of play and perception.

Yoko reflects, “When you were little, you probably once came across making paper binoculars with cardboard tubes. For me, I did a lot of times and sometimes I even put cling wrap over it to mimic the lenses.

It didn’t work as binoculars of course, (the cling wrap made the view even worse) but I remembered that when I looked through the paper binoculars everything looked different.

Looking at the sky, trees, flowers, pebbles, animals, just anything... everything changed colour, becoming vibrant, and the details became clear, some interesting patterns appeared and animals became a character to tell a story.

In this body of work, I looked through my paper binocular filters to draw and make into rugs and paper sculptures. I hope to never lose these binoculars.”

Yoko Georgiou is a multidisciplinary artist from Japan, based on the Surf Coast in Australia. Working across various mediums – from textile design to rug tufting, paper craft to painting – Yoko transforms childhood memories and inspiration from nature into bold and vivid-coloured creations. Tangibility is a key goal across Yoko’s endeavours, all of her pieces are intended to be interacted with as functional artworks.
